Hello, Dolly!

Bible Blast: Read John 14:23-24

Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.

Proverbs 16:3

I will never forget the feeling that I had when I was sitting watching a church musical, the lights went dark, and a bright spotlight shone on one single face in the children’s chorus: my Lexi. She was about your age, and she had kept her solo a secret from me. The sweetest sound in the entire world began to fill the sanctuary, and I heard the words, “All is well.” It was a lullaby from the heart of Mary on the night that Jesus was born, and it sounded heavenly. What? Could this be my Lexi? She sounded like an angel!

She’s been singing ever since, and has about ten musicals under her belt. In fact, as I write this, I am sitting in the waiting room of tryouts for our community theater. Just a moment ago, Lexi was called back to sing a solo, read her lines, and learn a short chorus dance. I immediately began to pray, and I didn’t know what to pray, but then I looked up at the verse that my friend Janet had selected for today and my problem was solved. (How perfect God was to supply this verse!)

So I sat there committing the actions of Lexi Gresh to the Lord and knowing that no matter what happened, she would be a success in God’s eyes. What a peace this gave me. You see, in a few minutes she could come out and be called back for a second tryout. Or she could come out and be sent home. Either way, when we commit our plans to the Lord, we can know that he is moving us toward success. You see, God sees Lexi’s life far beyond tryouts for Hello, Dolly! He sees everything that he wants for her this summer, and there might be something greater than Hello, Dolly! in his plans.

A Christian can have a different perspective on success, and that can offer you peace in auditions, sports tryouts, academic tests, and all of life. The next time you feel a little nervous about the outcome of something, remember to “commit your actions to the LORD.” Then move forward, giving your best effort possible, knowing that your plans will be successful through the eyes of the One who sees your whole life plan.

Girl Gab: Mom, tell your daughter about a time that you felt nervous for her. Did you pray? cry? talk nervously? Daughter, tell your mom about something in your life that you’d like to “commit” to the Lord because you feel a little nervous or fearful. Then, pray together about that, knowing that God will help you to succeed in his eyes.
