He Is Bread And Water; We Are Hungry And Thirsty
He Is Bread and Water; We Are Hungry and Thirsty
Bible Blast: Read John 6:28-35
I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35
There aren’t many things better than a loaf of warm, freshly baked bread. My tummy’s growling just thinking about it! So obviously when you read the title of today’s devo, you can know I’m not saying that Jesus is a loaf of bread and a glass of water. The devo title points to Christ being the ultimate source to meet our most essential needs.
The people described in John 6 were demanding miracles. They figured that since the Israelites way back in the Old Testament got manna (bread) sent to them from heaven every day, then they should get something like that, too. They didn’t realize that the real “Bread” from heaven was standing right in front of them, looking them right in the eyes.
When Jesus called himself the bread of life, he was saying that he came to completely fill and satisfy everyone who is hungry. What are people hungry for? Lots of things: forgiveness, hope, joy, happiness, love, peace, and feeling as if they’re important. Jesus fills all those needs.
Verse 35 says that Jesus claimed that whoever believes in him won’t ever be thirsty again. In John 4 there’s a story about Jesus and a woman he meets at a well. Jesus pointed at the water in the well and told her, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
The ultimate way Jesus satisfies those who are hungry and thirsty is by giving them eternal life. In heaven all of our needs will be met. We’ll never be starving or dying of thirst again. But until we get to heaven, Jesus fills us up every day with the bread of his Word and the water of the promise of eternal life.
Girl Gab: Are you feeling empty in any way today? Ask your mom to pray that God will fill you up and satisfy you. Do the same thing for her.
