God’s Mind vs. Our Minds

Bible Blast: Read Isaiah 55:8-9

Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

Look outside right now. What do you see? Is the grass still green where you live? Is it raining? Or do you see everything covered in a blanket of snow? Are there hundreds of icicles hanging from the power lines?

Maybe you’re one of those fortunate few who look outside and see water and sand. But even if that’s not you, you can still learn a lesson about the ways of God from the beach.

Picture yourself taking a bucket and a shovel and heading onto the shore of the ocean. The waves are crashing in. You can hear the seagulls chattering to each other. You can smell and taste the saltwater in the air. You dig a pretty big hole on the shore with your shovel. Now you get a bucket of water from the ocean and pour the water into the hole. And you do that over and over and over again. Finally, somebody who’s been watching you comes up and says, “What are you trying to do?” You look up at him and reply, “I’m going to take all the water from the ocean and put it in that hole.”

I hope you’re sitting there, thinking, That’s a ridiculous story. I would never try to do that because it’s impossible!

You’re right. Our human brains can only understand so much of who God is and what he does. His thoughts really aren’t like ours at all. He’s the perfect, all-powerful Creator, and we’re not. Trying to “figure out God” is a lot like trying to empty the ocean one bucket at a time into a small hole on the beach. It’s not possible, and we shouldn’t attempt it.

We have a pretty good idea why God does some of the things he does. But there will be plenty of times when he will do something that simply seems mysterious to us. We won’t understand why or even how he did it, and we just have to let that go. It’s part of having faith. We need to believe that even though we don’t understand everything God does, we can still trust him and know his way is much better than our own.
