You can go into clothing stores all over the place and find T-shirts designed for girls your age that have lots of things to say about boys.
• “Girls Rule. Boys Drool.”
• “Boys Smell.”
• “Girls Are Better Than Boys.”
Adult women really want young women to feel strong and powerful. They don’t want their daughters to feel weak and useless. One approach to achieving this is to encourage girls and help them believe they can do anything. Another approach is to tear down boys, trying to make them feel weak and small. Those T-shirt slogans tear down boys.
I understand that you might still be at a stage where you really don’t care for boys. I also understand that sometimes boys really do smell after they’ve been running around like crazy. However, I also understand that boys were created by God, just like you.
Many of you will fall in love and get married some day. You want your future husband to be a protector, leader, and friend. Those boys that you see running around at school and youth group are going to be men who become husbands. What happens in their lives now helps to determine what kind of men they will become later.
When you make fun of boys or call them “dumb” and other names, it can cause a lot of pain. And boys don’t like to appear like they have feelings, so they hide it. You may never even know a boy is being hurt by your words.
The next time you see a boy doing something weird or annoying, instead of telling him he’s weird and annoying, don’t say anything at all. Ask God to help you see that boy as a wonderful creation of God. Once you begin to see those “icky” boys differently, your opinion of them just might change.
Girl Gab: Mom, tell your daughter about a boy who annoyed you when you were younger. Daughter, tell your mom about a boy who is hard for you to deal with. Pray for both of those boys now.
