Forever Is a Long Time

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 136

Give thanks to the God of heaven. His faithful love endures forever. Psalm 136:26

Most likely, someday the man you love will bow down on one knee, hold out a diamond engagement ring, and say, “Will you marry me?” If you say yes, he will take that ring and place it on the ring finger of your left hand. People say wedding rings are placed on that particular finger because it has a direct connection to the heart by a long-reaching vein.

We use diamonds in rings because “diamonds are forever.” While it is possible to destroy a diamond, it’s pretty difficult. They’re the hardest gemstones on the planet. That’s why people can pass their diamonds on in a family for generations. Diamonds are a symbol of pure love for eternity.

Psalm 136 is a beautiful love song written for God. The pattern of the psalm is to state a truth about God and then follow it with a diamond of a statement: “His faithful love endures forever.” Isn’t that what a man is saying when he proposes to his true love? “My love is true, and I’ll love you forever.”

No matter what happens, God’s love doesn’t change or disappear. The day you gave your heart to Jesus, he gave you that diamond promise of his love.

It doesn’t take long to figure out that lots of things don’t last forever. In spite of that, girls still obsess over things like boys, clothes, music, celebrities, food, and stuff, as if those things are never going to go away. Those things are all like “fake diamonds.” They look pretty and feel like the real thing, but over time they fade away or get crushed.

God’s love is the real deal. His love lasts forever. It doesn’t make sense to obsess over something that’s temporary, does it? God’s eternal love is the only thing worth obsessing over. It won’t go away, and it won’t ever cause us harm.

The next time you get hurt by a relationship gone bad or you lose something you totally love, remind yourself that “God’s love is faithful, and it lasts forever.”
