Cash Isn’t King

Margaret Layne of England died when she was eighty-nine years old. At the time of her death she owned (the equivalent of) a $564,000 house and a $161,000 trust fund. Who do you think she left her small fortune to in her will? Tinker, a stray cat that Margaret had befriended. Her neighbors were instructed to make sure Tinker had the run of the house and was well taken care of. Lucy and Stardust, two other kitties, have decided to move in with Tinker, and who could blame them? A three-bedroom house provides a lot of play space and sunny patches, perfect for three spoiled felines.

I doubt that Tinker has any idea of the gift he’s received because money doesn’t mean anything to a cat. Maybe we could learn something from that British kitty. Don’t you think most people put way too much trust in the money they make? Some people really believe if they have a lot of money, nothing can harm them. They surround themselves with more and more stuff, and that’s where their security is. Having a lot of money makes them feel safe.

Money is a necessary thing. It’s important to work hard and make sure your needs are provided for. Money is not evil or bad. Loving and trusting money is the danger. The Bible talks about this problem. “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:10).

The love of money will tempt people away from their faith in God. Many popular movies have main characters whose goal in life is simply to get more and more money. When money becomes a person’s passion, she becomes willing to do anything to get it, and she is never satisfied for long. She always wants more.

Don’t fall into the trap of obsessing about money. Money is paper. It can’t save you. It doesn’t last forever.
