A Real Grand Slam Breakfast
A Real Grand Slam Breakfast
Bible Blast: Read John 21:1-14
“Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. John 21:12
Not too long ago, Denny’s restaurants were offering free Grand Slam breakfasts to anyone who came in really early in the morning. Free food is always a good idea, so my friend Kim and I grabbed our daughters and headed to Denny’s at 5:45 a.m. We arrived to find about a gazillion other people waiting for their free Grand Slam breakfasts.
We girls were feeling kind of giddy about our fun breakfast adventure, so we thought we would do something to get everyone in the restaurant as excited as we were. We counted to three, stood up, and yelled, “Grand Slam!” thinking that all the other folks waiting around would respond with cheers or at least yell it back to us. But that’s not exactly what happened.
After we yelled, the place was completely quiet. No one cheered, yelled, or even cracked a smile. They just stared until we sat back down in our seats. Awkward!
Do you know why we call the first meal of the day “breakfast”? Most of us eat dinner and maybe a little snack before bed, but then we spend all night sleeping, not eating. That’s a “fast” because we go for a period of time without eating or drinking. When we wake up and eat that first meal, we are “breaking” the “fast” from the night before. So breakfast has nothing to do with getting up, eating your food super “fast,” and making a “break” for the school bus!
Jesus once made breakfast for the disciples. (You can read about it in today’s Bible Blast.) He prepared fish and bread for them, cookout style.
The wildest thing about this story is that Jesus conducted this breakfast meeting after he had been resurrected from the dead. The disciples must have been blown away with amazement. When Peter realized he was seeing Jesus, he just jumped into the water and swam for shore. He had to get to Jesus.
Every day it’s like Jesus is saying to us, “Now come and have some breakfast!” Not so we can sit down and have bacon and eggs (or bread and fish!), but so he can feed us with the truth of his Word.
Girl Gab: Talk about this question with your mom: If you could have only one thing for breakfast for the rest of your life, what would you choose? How does God’s Word “feed” you? Make a commitment to “dive right in” when God is waiting to spend time with you.
