A Different Kind Of Yo-yo
A Different Kind of Yo-Yo
Bible Blast: Read Ephesians 1:19-23
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.
Psalm 81:10
If you were naming a child, “Yo-Yo” would probably not be the first name that popped into your brain. Yo-Yo Ma was born to his Chinese parents in Paris, France. Yo-Yo and his sister were taught music from the beginning of their lives. By age five, Yo-Yo played the cello and the piano at a concert at the University of Paris.
The cello is kind of like a really big violin. It’s so big that it isn’t held up under the chin. It is set down on the ground to be played. It makes a lower, deeper sound than a violin. A person who plays the cello is called a “cellist.”
Yo-Yo was already well on his way to becoming a great cellist at the age of seven when his family moved to New York City. He did great in his studies and amazed his music teachers. When he became a teenager, he went through a time when he didn’t feel like practicing, but he didn’t give up on the cello because it was important to him.
Over the years, Yo-Yo Ma has become one of the top cellists in the world, performing with the best-known orchestras and performing solo concerts. He even had the privilege of playing for Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration.
When Yo-Yo was younger, his dad played music by Johann Sebastian Bach for his son before bed. He would tell him, “This is not practicing. This is for you.”
Yo-Yo spent a lot of time in his life giving the gift of music to others, but his dad was there to remind him, “You can’t keep giving, giving, giving if you’re not also receiving.”
That’s true in our lives with Christ, too. It’s important to give, serve, teach, and help others, but we must also get filled up by God with times that are just for us. Otherwise, we’re going to eventually run dry.
Spend time in God’s Word. Take time to have conversations with the Lord. Have times of private worship with him. Meditate on his truth. These things will fill you up and allow you to give to others without drying up.
Girl Gab: Plan to take in a lot of water today. Try to drink eight full glasses of water before you hit the sack tonight. (That’s the daily recommendation.) Every time you drink, thank God for something specific he’s done for you.
