Why is gossip so harmful?

A gossip goes around revealing secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence. Proverbs 11:13

Gossip separates the best of friends. Proverbs 16:28

What dainty morsels rumors are —but they sink deep into one’s heart. Proverbs 18:8

A gossip tells secrets, so don’t hang around with someone who talks too much. Proverbs 20:19

Others may accuse you of gossip. Then you will never regain your good reputation. Proverbs 25:10

Gossip is a sin we must avoid. It unjustly robs another person of his or her reputation or uses someone else’s information without their permission. Worse, gossip often does this with half-lies, half-truths, suggestions, and innuendos. Through gossip, we take away something precious that another person owns —their integrity. That may be the worst kind of theft.

God’s Promise

Fire goes out for lack of fuel, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops. Proverbs 26:20
