Pulling A Friend From The Pit

Pulling a Friend from the Pit

How can I help a friend who seems discouraged or depressed?

God’s Response

Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15

Singing cheerful songs to a person with a heavy heart is like taking someone’s coat in cold weather or pouring vinegar in a wound. Proverbs 25:20

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.” Psalm 122:1

Two things are often helpful—modeling the gentle, caring love of Christ, and helping your friend through the darkness by keeping him or her involved with other Christians. Depressed people often pull away and withdraw from others. Those dealing with depression need comfort and understanding, not advice and lectures. You can help a depressed person by your quiet presence, your love, and your encouragement.

This Is Promising

When he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.

Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. Matthew 14:30-31
