Are feelings of depression sinful?
God’s Response
“O God my rock,” I cry, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?” Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?” Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God! Psalm 42:9-11
You can’t feel much lower than David did when he wrote this psalm. These kinds of feelings are not necessarily sinful, but your actions and thoughts can be if you allow your feelings to overwhelm you. Your feelings of depression may tempt you to turn away from God and others. Tell God how you are feeling. Don’t be afraid to be brutally honest with him, as David was. He can handle it and he can help you.
This Is Promising
I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. Psalm 40:1-2
