Materialism

Materialism

How can I avoid a materialistic lifestyle?

God’s Response

You must burn their idols in fire, and do not desire the silver or gold with which they are made. Do not take it or it will become a snare to you. Deuteronomy 7:25

The LORD gave me everything I had. Job 1:21

Sell what you have and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven have no holes in them. Your treasure will be safe—no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Luke 12:33

Because people have an enormous passion for wanting more things, materialism has great power to turn them away from the Lord. The problem is not with the things themselves, but with a focus on acquiring and managing wealth that begins to consume all your time and push God out of your life. Take another look at what is really valuable. Investing money for the future is important, but investing in God’s work and in the lives of others pays dividends for eternity. Your monetary investments become worthless to you when you die—none of them can go with you. Consider the spiritual investments you have made. What treasures have you been storing up for eternity?

God’s Promise

This world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever. 1 John 2:17
