Why does the Bible tell me to “guard” my heart?

Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do. Proverbs 4:23

Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts. 1 John 5:21

My child, listen and be wise. Keep your heart on the right course. Proverbs 23:19

The intent of a guardrail on a dangerous curve is not to inhibit your freedom to drive but to save your life! That guardrail is a sign of security and safety, not an obstacle to flying. In the same way, you need a guardrail as you travel through life, not to inhibit your freedom but to keep your life from going out of control. Your heart determines where you go because it most affects your passions and emotions. If you don’t guard your heart with God’s Word and stay focused on the road God has put you on, you may have a terrible accident when temptation distracts you.

God’s Challenge

These were his instructions to them: “You must always act in the fear of the LORD, with integrity and with undivided hearts.” 2 Chronicles 19:9
