How do I make sure I give a true compliment and not flattery?

In the end, people appreciate frankness more than flattery. Proverbs 28:23

The difference between a compliment and flattery is found in the motivation behind the words. A sincere compliment is all about the other person, designed to build him or her up. Flattery is all about you, saying something nice to get you something in return. Never ignore your conscience—it will tell you if you are sincere.
