It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the best man is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. John 3:29

It was the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Until now, John the Baptist had been the prevailing voice for change.

In the arena of public awareness, John the Baptist was at the top of his game. He was among the most famous people of his time, despite his odd diet and unusual fashion sense.

John also understood how to be a good Number Two.

John had a strong sense of his personal place in the scheme of things. He was aware of the important role he had been given and didn’t try to elbow his way into an undeserved position.

Being a Number Two is not an easy role to fill. John wasn’t an entry-level tagalong. He held his own in the spotlight, and when it came time to shine the light on someone greater, John was ready to remain active in the background.
