Speak Truth To Power

Then the LORD said, “I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are. Now leave me alone so my fierce anger can blaze against them. . . .”

But Moses tried to pacify the LORD his God. “O LORD!” he said. “Why are you so angry?” Exodus 32:9-11

Yahweh was burning with anger over the golden calf incident and told Moses he had decided to take drastic action.

The ensuing conversation is a great example of the difficult practice known as “speaking truth to power.”

Without getting into the theology of the exchange, Moses boldly asserted his case. He presented a reasoned argument, stated some facts about previous commitments, and suggested a course of action.

Moses provided many examples of leadership, but this lesson is about being a graceful follower. The decision belonged to God, but Moses didn’t shrink from presenting his case clearly and calmly.

Moses must have had great faith that his leader would welcome such honesty. Would your people feel the same way about you?
