Set An Example

Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Zechariah 7:9-10

I have been pondering this passage for nearly twenty-four hours. I am trying to find a relevant lesson, because you deserve more than my simply saying, “Read this and do what it says.”

And here’s what I have: You must become an example.

Become a shining light of genuine fairness, mercy, and kindness to the world.

Speak and act against the mistreatment of widows (single moms), parentless kids, alien workers (legal and illegal), and those whose personal economies are in worse shape than your own.

Take a leadership role in getting along with fellow followers of Jesus; work together for everyone’s good.

Zechariah reminds Israel that their “ancestors refused to listen to this message” (7:11), which is why the Lord was so angry with them.

It can start with you. It must start with you. Who else will do it?
