Do Something Unusual

Do Something Unusual

The woman was surprised. John 4:9

I am a huge fan of improvisational comedy. When a really good improv comic is on stage, I am glued to the edge of my seat. Experience tells me that it’s going to be surprising and funny, so I pay strict attention to every word.

Being unpredictable is one of the best ways to get someone’s attention. If you repeat the same message too many times, people will ignore you. If they think they already know what you’re going to say, they will stop paying attention.

Jesus was a master of unpredictability.

The woman at the well was shocked that Jesus would speak to her, let alone ask her for a drink of water. He also surprised her by telling her things she thought no one else knew. In so doing, Jesus captured her attention, and quite possibly her heart.

Take time to understand how others perceive your organization. Are you so predictable that folks have begun to ignore your messages? Without changing what you stand for, could you get their attention by doing something unusual?
