Visionary Prayer - Jabez

There was a man named Jabez who was more honorable than any of his brothers. His mother named him Jabez because his birth had been so painful.

1 Chronicles 4:9

Have you ever been absolutely convinced that God has given you a vision for something specific, but you don’t know exactly how to pray for it? You may have a vision for ministry, for your family, or for a career move.

When God gives us a vision, it’s easy to just freeze and wait to see what happens, but the Bible teaches that when we receive a vision for something specific, we are to pray equally specifically.

Jabez understood the importance of praying with that kind of vision.

The Bible doesn’t tell us much about Jabez except that he was an honorable man whose name meant “pain.” His only recorded words are this well-known prayer: “Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!” (1 Chronicles 4:10).

God said yes to everything Jabez asked for because Jabez had the faith and courage to ask for these things:

That God would bless him. Jabez began his prayer with the premise that God desired to bless him. Jabez went to the Source of all good things for what he needed.

That God would expand his territory. Jabez understood the importance of praying specifically. He knew that God wanted to bless him on many levels, and he wasn’t afraid to ask for that!

That God would be with him in all that he did. Jabez understood that he was headed nowhere without God’s hand of guidance, protection, and strength on him. He knew that his sufficiency was not in his possessions, family, or personal prestige but in the God who promises to be with his people.

That God would keep him from all trouble and pain. Another version of this same request reads, “Keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.” Jabez asked God for a humble heart and for an ability to do right by other people.

When you know Who to pray to, what to ask for, and how to pray for it, you are well on your way to receiving the blessings reserved for those who earnestly and consistently pray the way Jabez did.
