Exciting Marriage - Solomon

You are as exciting, my darling, as a mare among Pharaoh’s stallions. How lovely are your cheeks; your earrings set them afire! How lovely is your neck, enhanced by a string of jewels.

Song Of Solomon 1:9-10

Joe Namath of the New York Jets and Roger Staubach of the Dallas Cowboys were two of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League. Both made names for themselves on the football field, but off the field they were as different as night and day.

Namath was the world’s most eligible bachelor in the early 1970s, known for his promiscuous lifestyle. Staubach was a Christian family man whose life appeared boring to some people next to that of Namath.

In one interview, Staubach compared his sex life with “Broadway Joe’s,” saying, “I like sex just as much as Joe Namath. Only I like it with one person—my wife, Marianne.”

One of the devil’s biggest lies is that godly men aren’t allowed to enjoy sex. The Bible teaches that married men can enjoy a mutually exciting and passionate sexual relationship with the wife God has given them. The excitement in that bedroom can far eclipse anything Broadway Joe ever knew.

The young Solomon enjoyed his beloved on a physical level and found her exciting in the way she looked, dressed, smelled, and talked. Just nine verses into his poem, Solomon tells his beloved Shulamite that she excites him in every way.

Solomon doesn’t provide us with a great example of monogamous love—he had hundreds of wives by the end of his life—but he does illustrate the kind of excitement you can find with your wife, most definitely including the marriage bed you share with her.

Love your wife as God intended. He designed sex as a means of procreation and as an exciting, enjoyable expression of love between you and your wife.
