Brag On God - Asaph

As for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign LORD my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.

Psalm 73:28

The Grand Rapids Press reported the story of a new car owner whose incessant boasting about his automobile’s gas mileage began to irritate his friends. Wanting to put a stop to his constant bragging, they played a prank on him. Each day, one of them sneaked into the lot where he parked his car and poured a few gallons of gas into his tank. Before long this braggart felt the frustration of trying to convince people that he was getting as much as ninety miles per gallon.

Then came phase two.

Instead of adding fuel to his tank, his friends siphoned some off every day. Within a week, he stopped talking about gas mileage. His car’s fuel economy had dipped to fifteen miles per gallon!

It’s never a good idea to establish a reputation as a braggart, but it’s always good to count your blessings and boast of God’s goodness.

Asaph, a leader in King David’s choir, loved to boast in that way. Asaph saw the value of openly and consistently telling others of God’s goodness and of the many wonderful things he did for him every day. Asaph felt grateful for God’s protection and provision and for the fellowship he enjoyed with the Lord.

This isn’t just “glass half full” talk, either. In Psalm 73, Asaph expressed his frustration and anger to God at the rampant injustice, oppression, and godlessness in the world around him. But though those things displeased him, he still remembered to thank God for his blessings and to tell those around him just how good God is.

How often do you brag on God and his goodness? Count your blessings regularly, whether they are physical, emotional, or spiritual. Then tell those around you of the many wonderful things God does for you each day.
