All Good Things - King David

“Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength.”

1 Chronicles 29:12

A man nearing retirement knew that he had things pretty good. He had worked hard, made an excellent living, and had the common sense to squirrel away enough funds so that he and his wife could live out their golden years in comfort—and even take some trips now and again.

Though this accomplished man had an industrious streak and a knack for making money, when the time came for his retirement, he gratefully accepted his gold watch, thanked his business partners, and told them, “I’m pleased with what I’ve been able to accomplish during my years of hard work. At the same time, I’m aware that none of this could have happened without God’s blessings. He is the One who allowed me to do everything I’ve done.”

This man “got it”! He understood that although he had worked hard, God was the source of all his accomplishments.

King David also understood that every blessing he had ever enjoyed came from God’s open hand. That included the humble realization that no one, whatever his station in life, ever receives anything good apart from God.

As David prepared to hand over the reins of power to his son Solomon, he looked back on his time as Israel’s second and greatest king and humbly acknowledged that all his wealth and power, and the wisdom to know what to do with them, came directly from God’s generous hand.

The Bible says that David “died at a ripe old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth, and honor” (1 Chronicles 29:28). That was because he never forgot the source of all good things.

God loves hearing you declare him as your source of all good things. When you acknowledge his goodness and generosity, you allow others to see God at work in your life and open yourself to additional blessing.
