A Heart For Worship - Abraham

The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar there and dedicated it to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

Genesis 12:7

What do the angels think when they see you singing hymns with your family at a Sunday morning church service? Do they think, Wow! That man has learned how genuine worship connects him to the very Power of the universe! Or do they mutter, “That pathetic human stands there moving his lips, but he has no clue what’s really happening here”?

Have you ever thought about the power that is available through praise and worship of our heavenly Father?

King David wrote, “You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:3). The sentence can be translated, “God inhabits the praise of his people.” The Bible makes it clear that praise and worship are avenues through which we enjoy fellowship with God.

We have many biblical examples of men who understood the importance of worship and made it a regular part of their lives. Abraham, the man God called to be the father of his chosen people, may be one of our best examples.

Abraham was a rich man who obeyed God’s call to take his family, pull up his stakes, and leave his home in Haran to travel to an unknown land. Wherever Abraham settled, even temporarily, he always took the time to build an altar and worship God.

We don’t build altars to God today because the Holy Spirit lives within the bodies of all who place their faith in Jesus Christ. However, God still wants us to follow Abraham’s marvelous example regarding the importance of worship.
