What To Wear

Read: Matthew 22:1-14

History is heading in a specific direction. Many people don’t believe that, but it’s true. Scripture has told us so from the beginning, and God’s prophecies to this point have proven true. There is a consummation coming, a fulfillment for the human race and for God’s original design for us. When Jesus returns and evil is fully overcome, there’s going to be a wedding. And everyone is invited to the feast.

This parable of Jesus tells us that not everyone will accept that invitation. Those who seem most likely to attend—the context is pointed sharply at the religious leaders of the time—don’t think it’s worth their time and find something else to do. Even so, the banquet hall will be full. God sends out an invitation to all who will accept it, regardless of how esteemed they are by society.

Like many of Jesus’ parables, this one has layers of meaning and makes multiple points. Here we see a portrayal of God as someone who is eager to share His abundance with those who are willing to receive it. Like the father of the Prodigal Son, God loves a good feast and wants to celebrate with His people. His only requirement is that they accept the invitation.

But the parable ends with a dark turn. Someone who comes to the feast is not dressed in the right clothes, and he’s thrown out of the party. Does he represent those of us who aren’t worthy? No, no one who comes to the feast is worthy. Perhaps he accepted the invitation without ever allowing God to “dress” him. Perhaps he has come willing to celebrate but unwilling to repent. Regardless, we know this: The wedding clothes are extremely important.

IN DEED

Later passages in the New Testament talk about being clothed in Christ—wearing His character and taking on His nature. And really, would we want to show up at the wedding in any other attire? No, the Kingdom culture, full of grace, nevertheless has a dress code. Let Jesus clothe you in Himself daily.
