The Highest Mountain

Read: Micah 4:1-7

In the last days, the mountain of the LORD’s house will be the highest of all—the most important place on earth. It will be raised above the other hills, and people from all over the world will stream there to worship. Micah 4:1

IN WORD

In many cultures, and in Scripture, mountains are symbols of power. Worship centers, both true and false, are built on their heights. Like human longings for transcendence, they stretch to the heavens in search of divine connection. On our land, in our culture, in our hearts, mountains speak of the desire of humanity to rule and reign and tap into supernatural influence. They are firmly established swells on the landscape of life.

Here in Micah (and in a parallel passage in Isaiah 2), the Spirit tells us that the worship of God will become the highest mountain on earth. It’s hard to imagine Mount Zion in Jerusalem becoming a majestic peak, but it becomes the spiritual equivalent of Everest. By comparison, all other mountains are made low.

That’s good to know. Our world is full of seemingly immovable power centers: the dictates of culture, the vagaries of economy, the whims of politics, and the demands of all sorts of structures and principalities in this age. We live and move within these systems, but we often feel confined by them. They are disputed territory, where the Kingdom and its rivals contend for hearts and minds. In North America, we see evil flowing out of Washington, Hollywood, and Wall Street, but we also know they can be influenced by God’s people and become influencers of our culture. These mountains will one day be dwarfed by the mountain of God. He will tower over the landscape.

IN DEED

Notice when this is to happen. According to the prophecy, it’s not “after the last days.” It’s in them. That means there is some significant establishment of God’s preeminence and glory in the earth before Jesus comes back, and you play a role in it. Your assignment in this life is to live on His mountain and contribute to its influence. The more He is honored in His realm, the more people will come streaming to Him.
