Planned Beforehand

Read: Ephesians 2:1-10

We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10

IN WORD

Imagine finding a map to buried treasure. You don’t quite know how to interpret it, but you know someone who does. You call that person, ask some questions about the symbols and directions on the map, follow every instruction as you discover what each one means, and eventually arrive at the place where the treasure is buried. You dig it up and celebrate the rewarding experience.

What are the key facts about this process? (1) The treasure is already there; (2) a map and a guide will help you find it; and (3) it’s up to you to do the legwork. If you think about it, those are exactly the same key facts about doing the works God has given us. He has already planned for us to do good works and has laid them out in front of us. He has given us His Word and His Spirit, both available to answer our questions and guide us in the process. And we have to actually get up and step into the things He has prepared for us. Like treasures in a field, the works of the Kingdom are waiting for us to discover and bring to the surface.

IN DEED

God has called each Kingdom citizen to be a treasure hunter. We rarely just stumble into the works of the Kingdom. We have to go searching for them. There are plenty of clues, and we need to ask lots of questions. That’s one of the ways we build our relationship with the Spirit; we ask and listen for answers. Over time, He guides us, unveils secrets, and shows us where and how to do His works. But the works are already there. He planted them and leaves them for us to discover.

That’s how the Kingdom adventure works. If we understand the process, move in the directions He leads, and exercise faith at the time it is needed, we will participate in the works of God. And the world will be blessed with treasures it never knew existed.
