Honored By God

Read: 2 Samuel 7:1-16

[God said to David,] “Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth!” 2 Samuel 7:9

IN WORD

God honored David’s request because He knew David’s heart. But He didn’t just stop at honoring David’s request. He honored David. Personally.

Why? God had chosen David out of obscurity for his humility and sincere heart. God loves those characteristics. So it may seem odd that God took David out of a humble position and put him in one that engenders pride and corruption. But who else could He trust in such a position? David was prepared for the responsibility and authority of kingship precisely because he was unlike typical kings. As a human being, David was corruptible like everyone else; but he was less corruptible than the proud and unstable. God was not reluctant to bestow honor on someone whose heart belonged to Him.

It isn’t God’s intention for His people to live in perpetual obscurity. He loves humility, but He also exalts the humble. He has no problem giving generous gifts. We should have no problem receiving them. He has destined us for greatness, even in the eyes of the world. Though we tend to add a caveat—greatness only in the Kingdom, never in the world—God often offers both. There is no fine print at the end of His promises. He has destined His people, especially the humble ones, for good things.

IN DEED

If your humility has kept you from desiring success or prominence, take heart. God is more than willing to establish you, not only in the eyes of Kingdom citizens but also in the eyes of the world. That doesn’t mean you will be loved by everyone or make the cover of magazines. You may never win awards or receive applause, and you may even have detractors. David certainly did. But you will be raised up and firmly planted in secure places with honor. Over time, your reputation will be vindicated by the God who loves your worshipful heart. If you have made it your desire to honor Him, He has destined you for honor in His Kingdom.
