Hearing His Voice #337
Hearing His Voice #337
“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD.
Isaiah 1:18, NKJV
God rarely urges human beings to depend on their reason. He doesn’t want us to be unreasonable, of course, but He knows the mind’s capacity to deceive itself. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were often standing apart and reasoning to themselves, trying to trap Jesus in His own words. Why? Because they had well-constructed theologies in their own minds, and Jesus didn’t fit them. So human intelligence has been known to be less than reliable in spiritual matters—perhaps best evidenced by the tens of thousands of Christian denominations that are convinced they have interpreted the Scriptures correctly, even though they have all done so differently. Sadly, the human mind is not a great interpreter of spiritual truth.
But God still wants us to reason if we do it together—with Him. He wants to be an integral part of the logical process, guiding our understanding to be able to grasp things we could never grasp naturally. He gives us revelation to aid our mental processes, leading our thoughts and feelings and spiritual senses to embrace truth and discern error. He speaks into every aspect of our being and awakens us to the realities of His Kingdom. Those who submit their minds to Him will find them filled with thoughts that natural minds can’t receive.
Never approach Scripture only as an intellectual exercise. Your mind was created to understand, but not to arrive at knowledge independently of God. Invite Him into your thought processes. Ask Him to enlighten your understanding and give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation. Trust Him to bring your heart and mind into alignment with His truth. And then you can be confident in the knowledge He has given.
Lord, You are the author of reason. Your logic, Your logos, is the wisdom behind all creation. Impart that wisdom to me. Enlighten my mind with Your truth. Cut through all the false reasoning of the world and draw me into the realities of Your Kingdom. Let me think clearly and consistently with Your Spirit.
