Hearing His Voice #263

Hearing His Voice #263

The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

Deuteronomy 29:29, NIV

God has His secrets. He also offers us layers of revelation. There are aspects of Himself that He reveals to everyone, such as His artistry in creation and the common graces He shows to everyone, whether or not they believe in Him. Then there are aspects of His nature and His will that He reveals only to those who have entered into a relationship with Him. The more we get to know Him, the more revelation we can embrace. The more we seek His face, the more of His face we see. Those who keep on asking, seeking, and knocking will find answers and paths and doors opened to them. God’s secrets become fewer as our hunger to know Him increases. He satisfies us with more and more truth.

Yet secrets remain. God is infinite, after all, and no human being knows Him fully. We will spend eternity discovering more of Him, yet never discovering enough of Him. His ways are inexhaustible. But even the placement within Scripture of Moses’ statement about things secret and things revealed makes a theological statement. Moses spoke of “the things revealed” and how they belong to God’s people at a time when there was much more revelation to come. Deuteronomy may be the end of the Torah, but it isn’t the end of Scripture. “The things revealed” weren’t done yet. There would be history and prophets and wisdom and a Messiah to come. That means God hadn’t finished unveiling His secrets. He was still in the process.

That’s really true for all of us. No one knows everything that God wants us to know, or has arrived at a place of seeing Him as fully as we ever will. There will always and forever be more. And He will always be inviting us into it.

Lord, let the “always more” shape my heart and drive me toward You daily. Show me something new every day. Take me from glory to glory in the pursuit of hearing and knowing You.
