I said to myself, “I will get up and roam the city, searching in all its streets and squares. I will search for the one I love.” So I searched everywhere but did not find him.

Words are rarely meaningful apart from the context in which they are spoken. So when we listen for God as a servant listens to a master, we will hear instructions. When we listen for Him as a student listens to a teacher, we will be taught and trained. When we listen for Him as a child listens to a parent, we will be encouraged and corrected. But when we listen for Him as the beloved longs for her lover . . . well, we hear a language of the heart that goes deeper than all other words and rings truer than all other voices.

Few who seek God do so in the context of love, but this is where the deep truths of God’s heart are revealed. Yes, He gives information, instructions, correction, and encouragement to any who will seek Him—after all, He promises wisdom to those who ask—but He does not allow just anyone to tap into the desires of His heart. Those secrets are reserved for those who search for Him with the longing of a would-be lover, for those who crave His presence and His touch simply because they are His. This takes us to deeper conversations than others dare to expect.

But it is a search, not a momentary transaction. The beloved in the Song of Songs roams the streets of the city looking for the one she loves—and at first she does not find him. Yet her search will soon be rewarded with a tight embrace. Hearts will cling to each other in unity. And deep, heart-to-heart thoughts, feelings, and desires will be shared freely.

You are the Lover of my soul, and I long for Your embrace. Open Your thoughts to me. Tell me Your desires. What are Your dreams? Share them with me. Take me deep into Your heart.
