Sweet Treat

What’s the best part about Kit Kat bars and Popsicles? They’re both sweet and delicious. Yes. But maybe the coolest thing is that they’re easy to share. According to the official Popsicle website, the classic Twin Popsicle ice pop was introduced during the Great Depression in the 1930s so two children could share a treat for just a nickel.

The invention of the Popsicle—like many other inventions—happened by accident. In 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Epperson left a mixture of powdered soda, water, and a stirring stick in a cup on his porch. Overnight, temperatures dropped and the mixture froze. In the morning, Frank found the frozen pop and called it an “Epsicle.” The treats were a hit with his friends at school. Eighteen years later, Frank changed the name to Popsicle, because by that time Frank’s children were always asking him for one of “Pop’s ’sicles.”

On this day in 1986, Popsicle announced plans to stop selling the traditional two-stick frozen snack for a one-stick model. Do you think the demise of the two-stick Popsicle is a sign of the times? Maybe kids today are less willing to share, so they want solo pops. That would be kind of sad. In the early church, followers of Jesus shared everything. Acts 2:44-45 says, “All the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.”

That’s amazing to think about. Early Christians shared everything. Can you imagine what it’d be like to sell what you have to help fellow believers and those in need? God may not be calling you to sell all your stuff, but he does want you to share. Earthly possessions are temporary. They lose value and fall apart. When you share what you have, you make somebody else feel better as you pass along the gifts God gave to you. God doesn’t want us to hoard our stuff. Share generously with others and see what happens.

Make your own frozen treat together. You’ll need your favorite fruit juice, paper cups, straws, and plastic wrap. Just pour the juice into the cup and cover it with plastic wrap. Push the straw through the plastic wrap and place the cup in the freezer. In a few hours, you can enjoy your treats together and talk about the benefits of sharing.
