Dear Diary

A lot of girls keep a diary. Boys do it too (they just call it a journal). A diary is a great place to write down your innermost thoughts and feelings. Your diary can help you express yourself in a way that you can’t in other, less private situations. Keeping a diary can also help you remember big events in your life and keep you grounded when tough times come.

If you don’t have a diary, experts say the best way to start one is to buy a diary that fits your personality. What’s your favorite color? Do you like metallic or pastel colors, horses or flowers? Once you find the perfect diary, write down some information about yourself, such as your age, the school you attend, your best friend, and favorite hobbies. Then write in your diary like you’d talk with a friend. It’s really pretty simple. Some people even write down what they’re praying and then record God’s answers. Years later, they go back and see how God worked in their lives.

Throughout history, diaries have provided insights into people’s lives and the time in which they lived. There’s just something powerful about the written word. God knows that, which is why he told Habakkuk, “Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others” (2:2). When you write something down, it has permanence. The message is clear and correct. Memories can fade and feelings change, but writing lasts.

If you haven’t done it before, write down the things most important to you. What do you believe about God? What do you see him calling you to do? What are you passionate about? Do you have any weaknesses that require you to lean more on the Lord? What can you do better than anyone else? What are your favorite things about your family? Take a few minutes to think about those questions, and write down the answers. And save your diaries . . . because when you’re older, you’ll be glad to have your dear diary.

Why do you think it was so important to God for Habakkuk to write down what he said? Talk about why it’s important to follow God’s instructions.

Then go grab a couple of pieces of paper or your diary. Write down the answers to the questions in today’s devotional. You can discuss your answers and even make up a few questions of your own. Save these papers someplace safe so you can go back and look at them later.
