A Head above the Rest

What’s the size of a grapefruit, feels like warm butter, and uses about 30 percent of your body’s energy to run properly? It’s your brain! Your brain is an amazing supercomputer with an estimated one quadrillion connections. That’s about as many connections—1,000,000,000,000,000—as there are grains of sand in the world! And your brain loves to learn—God made it that way.

Scientists say that some of your brainpower is determined by your parents. You sort of get what they have. But a majority of your brainpower is determined by you. That means if you study hard, feed your brain healthy foods (like nuts, fish, fruit, and green vegetables), drink lots of water, try new things, and keep reading and learning, then you can be smarter than your parents. (Just don’t tell your dad. . . . Oops! He probably read that, huh?) Your brain is like a muscle; if you feed it and give it a workout, it will get stronger.

Want to know something else cool about your brain? When you’re a follower of Jesus, you can have the mind of Christ. In other words, your brain will be able to understand God’s truths and know his thoughts in a way that other people can’t. First Corinthians says God’s Spirit can teach us spiritual truths. To people who don’t know God, having a goal to serve others can seem foolish. But we understand that God’s teachings are the best way to live, because “we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16).

As this school year continues, don’t get tired of learning. It’s easy to develop a case of spring fever and want to take a break. But keep reading, keep trying, and keep following God . . . your brain will thank you for it.

Daddy-Daughter Time

Give your brains a workout. Go to a computer and search for “Eugene’s sudoku.” It should take you to Focus on the Family’s Clubhouse website page with a list of sudoku puzzles. Print out a couple of copies of the same puzzle. Fold under the answer key at the bottom of the page (no peeking!). Then get a couple of pencils and race to see who finishes first. Remember the rules of sudoku: you must complete the grid so that each row, column, and three-by-three box contains every digit from one to nine. That means you can’t have any repeated numbers in a line or box. When you’re done, drink a glass of water and thank God for your amazing brains.
