Experiencing God's Presence #328

Experiencing God's Presence #328

Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you . . .”

Luke 10:21

Jesus gave thanks. A lot. He thanked God for hiding truth from those who are proud of their “wisdom” and revealing it to those who are humble and childlike (Luke 10:21). He thanked God for food—the loaves and fish He fed multitudes with (Matthew 15:36) and the bread and wine representing His own body and blood (Matthew 26:26-28). He thanked God for hearing His prayer to raise Lazarus from the dead (John 11:41). And He received thanks from those He healed and marveled that nine cleansed lepers neglected to express their appreciation (Luke 17:17-18). In His relationship with the Father and with others, Jesus established a culture of gratitude.

As always, we need to remember that Jesus is more than an example to follow; He’s the living Presence inside of us. When we’re in fellowship with Him and synchronized with His heart, a culture of gratitude will be formed within us. It’s helpful to develop and practice habits—vital, in fact—but it’s even more important to cultivate our union with His Spirit. The more we sense Him, commune with Him, and enjoy His Presence, the more our hearts will fill with a spirit of thanksgiving.

The flip side of this truth is that when we aren’t feeling very grateful, it’s a sign that we’re out of sync with Him. Let that drive you further into His Presence. Fellowship with Him reshapes our perspectives and restores all the right attitudes. And it reminds us that all He has done and continues to do for us is worthy of our gratitude.

Jesus, stir up gratitude within me. Fill my heart with Your praise. May my life always reflect the culture of gratitude You established.
