Experiencing God's Presence #242

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.

Psalm 4:8

David was bombarded with accusations and concerned for his reputation. He was the subject of rumors and lies and was trying not to let anger get the best of him. We don’t know the exact situation behind this psalm, but we know the relevant dynamics. The environment was tumultuous, and David felt besieged.

We can relate. We may not be plagued by the political intrigue David experienced, but we know what it’s like to have difficult circumstances swirling around us. Life has a way of making us feel “under siege.” And when it does, we lie awake wondering how things will play out. We envision various scenarios, plan how we might respond in each one, and speculate about what others are doing to make matters more complicated. Turbulent thoughts can keep us awake for hours.

David could lie down in peace—in shalom—and sleep. Why? Because he knew God was sovereign over his circumstances and present to help. Only God could ultimately vindicate him. Only God could defend him from his enemies. Only God could still the storm that raged around him. And David trusted that He would.

Where do you find peace in a storm? Certainly not in focusing on the storm. That never calms any situation. No, the way to lie down in shalom and sleep is to know beyond the shadow of a doubt that God is present, working on your behalf, and able to accomplish anything He wants to in the midst of it. Whatever storm you face in this season of life, trust in God’s desire and ability to keep you safe. He promises to be your help, your vindication, and your peace.

Lord, things are beyond my control. I know they always are, but they seem especially so now. I can’t fix my circumstances, but You can—and You can bring me peace in the midst of them. Please calm my heart and speak words of peace to me. And give me rest.
