Spokeswoman For God

Is there a precedent for women spokespersons for God?

• A prophetess led the people in celebrating God’s deliverance parting the Red Sea. “Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing.” (Exodus 15:20, NIV)
• A prophetess led the country into war and gained the victory God had promised. “Deborah, a prophetess . . . was leading Israel at that time.” (Judges 4:4, NIV)
• A prophetess went to a king to bring bad news of God’s judgment. Huldah, the prophetess, said, “Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard.’ ” (2 Kings 22:18, NIV)
• A prophetess waited for the Messiah to be born and spoke about the redemption of Israel. “There was also a prophetess, Anna. . . . Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36, 38, NIV)

A prophetess is one who speaks the truth. Women, men, children—all people are called to speak the truth. But God specifically gifts and calls some women to do it often and well. If you are called to speak out, God will be there, giving you the words.
