He’s A Jerk!

Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murdering the man and carrying out vengeance with my own hands. 1 Samuel 25:33

How can you achieve your potential if you are married to a man everyone thinks is a jerk? Abigail’s story is told in 1 Samuel 25.

And if you are wondering if her husband was really that bad, here’s what 1 Samuel 25:3 says about him: “This man’s name was Nabal, and his wife, Abigail, was a sensible and beautiful woman. But Nabal, a descendant of Caleb, was mean and dishonest in all his dealings.”

And when Nabal treated David and his men horribly, Abigail intervened and said this to David about Nabal: “I know Nabal is a wicked and ill-tempered man; please don’t pay any attention to him. He is a fool, just as his name suggests” (v. 25).

So how did Abigail handle Nabal?

• She did what is right even when Nabal did wrong. Nabal was shortsighted and selfish in his treatment of David and his troops. So Abigail hurried to do the right thing. She took two hundred loaves of bread, wine, dressed sheep, roasted grain, raisins, and figs, and loaded them on donkeys for David. (vv. 18-19)
• She didn’t take time to argue. She realized that she couldn’t change Nabal (only God could deal with Nabal and his horrible attitudes and actions). In verse 19 she told her servants that she would follow them, but she did not tell her husband, Nabal.

Choose right and do right, regardless of what your spouse chooses, and God will see and so will the people in your world.
