God’s Hunting Dog

God blesses you when you are mocked and persecuted and lied about because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted, too. Matthew 5:11-12

Born to a vice-governor in a Chinese province, Christiana Tsai was enrolled in a Christian mission school, vowing to never become a Christian.

Christiana and a friend, Miss Wu, began to write a book denouncing Christianity. However, Christiana began to read the Bible and listen to preaching in English to improve her skills. “God used my love for English to draw me to himself.”^a Soon, Miss Wu also came to faith in Christ.

Christiana shared her new faith with her family. She was bitterly rebuked for disgracing the family name. One brother grabbed her Bible and her hymnbook and tore them to pieces. But Christiana hung in there. She didn’t let the immediate failure detour her faith.

One by one her loved ones slowly responded. Her mother came to faith in Christ and quit a lifelong habit of smoking opium. That change sparked interest in other family members. Her mom, two brothers, and their wives were baptized, and her mom opened up her home for Bible studies. At age sixty-two she learned to read so she could read the Bible for herself.

Christiana began teaching in a government school. During class breaks she talked personally with the students, and she opened up her home so interested students could come and talk about Jesus. Seventy-two of her two hundred students came to know Christ.

The school’s director, Miss Plum, searched the school and confiscated Bibles and threatened expulsion to students caught attending Bible studies. However, the faith of the students withstood the persecution, and soon Miss Plum herself came to faith in Christ.

Christiana says, “I have never been to college or theological seminary. . . . I have only been God’s ‘hunting dog.’ I simply followed at the heels of my Master, and brought to His feet the quarry He sent me after.”^b
