Building A Track Record

“The Lord bless you, my daughter!” Boaz exclaimed. “You are showing more family loyalty now than ever by not running after a younger man, whether rich or poor.” Ruth 3:10

What moved Boaz to want to marry Ruth?

Consider what he knew about her: daughter-in-law of Naomi, a relative, so she had a good character reference. Then he witnessed with his own eyes a beautiful, young woman, gleaning in his fields to make sure her mother-in-law was provided for. He never heard Ruth criticize or complain.

When he asks her to lunch, Ruth is grateful, polite, and respectful. News of her godly character travels through town. This is no ordinary woman who has crossed his path; this is a woman who is building a strong, trustworthy reputation.

Then she shows up at his feet. This is not a sexual advance like a harlot but rather a reaching out, humbling herself to say, “I am interested in you.” As if to say, “I will wait, move on, or follow, according to your response.”

And he was moved to action by her high character.

Do you need people in positions of power to help you? Our reputation and actions show if we are worthy of others. We must consider how we respond to everyone around us. Is it with respect, courtesy, thankfulness, and honor?
