What might a description for a mom look like if it appeared in a local newspaper?

Wanted: A creative and patient woman to be a cook, chaplain, good listener, fashion consultant, decorator, recreation expert, teacher, chauffeur, psychologist, nurse, artist, gardener, economist, communication advisor, entertainer, purchasing agent, lawyer, and accountant. No pay, but excellent benefits!

Another job description of a mom is found in Proverbs 31, which points out both character qualities and actions of the mother it portrays. It’s impossible for any of us to live up to the example of this woman (or composite of women), but the chapter definitely gives us helpful principles to inspire us.

We are encouraged to be

• Merciful to the poor. This woman doesn’t shrink from helping others.
• Observant. Verse 27 informs us that she watches carefully all that goes on throughout her household.
• Trustworthy. Her family can rely on her character and integrity.
• Helpful. She opens her hands to the needy.
• Energetic. She plants her own garden; she quilts her own bedspread.
• Reverent toward God. She honors, obeys, and spends time with him.
• Wise. She gives instructions with kindness.
• Dignified. She is worthy of respect because her commitment to God lies at the foundation of everything she does.

Wow! This woman is worth so much that it’s hard to put a price tag on her. Don’t be intimidated by this woman, moms; be inspired! With God’s help, we can each be a treasure to our family.

We sometimes feel overwhelmed with all our responsibilities. We could never attempt to be an effective mom without your help. May we stay close to you, finding strength and wisdom to meet each day. Amen.
