Truth

Preach the word of God. Be persistent, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to right teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. They will reject the truth and follow strange myths.

2 Timothy 4:2-4

“What has happened to the moms and dads who want their children to be good? I believe they are casualties of the cultural war in our country. We live now in a country that believes we should be nonjudgmental to the point that we won’t even fight for the souls of our own children.” These words were spoken by U.S. Senator Rick Santorum in a commencement address at Grove City College (Pennsylvania) in 1998.

Santorum went on to say that when he was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, parents who cared about their children’s souls were called strict. Today, those parents are called right-wing radicals. Behavior that was once seen as offensive in our culture is now openly accepted. People who question that behavior or desire to curb it are written off as being intolerant.

Our culture is pleasure-driven. We hear people telling us to do what feels right and to follow our desires. We have gotten away from the painful, difficult process of discerning what is right and then acting on the truth.

So where do we go to find truth? We begin with the one who gave us truth in the first place—God. He gave us his Word, the Bible, which he says is truth. We are to study it and seek truth—then live it out in our families and our communities.

As we spend time with the truth-giver, we can be truth-bearers, first to our children and then to a needy world.

Father,

May we spend time in your Word regularly, so we can be truth-bearers to a world that needs you. Amen.
