The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day.
Lamentations 3:22-23
Imagine that I have given you a bowl full of sand and asked you to try to find the particles of iron in it. You might look for them with your eyes or run your fingers through the sand, but you wouldn’t be able to detect the iron. If, however, you took a magnet and swept it through the sand, the iron particles would be irresistibly drawn to it.
An unthankful heart is like a finger trying to sift the sand for iron—it doesn’t discover God’s mercies. But a thankful heart, just like the magnet, sweeps through life’s circumstances and finds daily blessings from God.
I do a lot of things daily. I walk, shower, read my Bible, feed the cat, bring in the mail, and read the newspaper. God does many things daily too, and I tried jotting some of them down one day to prompt my thankfulness. It wasn’t hard. God brought the sun up this morning. He sustained the crickets that I heard chirping. He provided the pleasant breeze I enjoyed while I was out walking. He oversaw the growth of the juicy peach I had for lunch. He brought the sun down in the evening. He gave me strength to meet the needs of the day.
A thankful heart prompts a good attitude. Because God’s blessings are new every morning, it’s good for us to keep our thanks current for what he supplies each day.
God our provider,
May we choose daily to have a grateful heart because you are faithful. Amen.
