And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere.”

We can teach our children nothing more important than the gospel of Jesus Christ, because it has eternal implications for their souls. The good news about Jesus was prophesied in the Old Testament: Jesus was born as a man into King David’s royal family line, he lived on earth for a while, he died a terrible death on a cross, and he was proven to be the Son of God when God raised him from the dead through the power of the Holy Spirit. God did all this to save us from the penalty of our sin, so that we could believe him, obey him, and bring glory to him (Romans 1:3-5).

I’m sometimes hesitant to share God’s Good News for fear that I won’t deliver it perfectly or that it won’t be received perfectly. But perhaps a better way to look at it is this: If my children (or neighbors, relatives, or friends) were in a burning building and there was plenty of time for me to warn them to get out, would I wait until I could say, “Get out of the building and go to a safe place” with perfect tact? Of course not! I’d deliver the message because it was urgent and because—if they acted on it—it would save their lives. So does the Good News of Jesus Christ.

When we share the good news with our children or friends or relatives, we tell them what Christ has done for us. As others have said, it’s as though each of us is one beggar telling another beggar where she found bread.

Father,

Thank you that the good news of Jesus gives us purpose now and hope for the future. Please help us to serve you by spreading the good news, beginning in our homes. Amen.
