Praise

Praise

O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.

Psalm 8:1

Imagine that you are the creator and founder of a large catering company. Not only did you form the company, but you personally crafted all the recipes being prepared and served. You selected, hired, and trained the entire staff, teaching them exactly how the food should be prepared and how the company should operate. Your company is such a success that you have been invited to prepare and serve the food at a convention.

As your staff serves the food, everyone exclaims how delicious and well-presented the meal is. In the conversation after the meal, all the ingredients are analyzed and the methods of preparation discussed, but no one ever acknowledges you as the creator, developer, and overseer of the company. You leave the event without having been recognized or affirmed by anyone—even your own staff! You would likely feel hurt or unappreciated.

I sometimes wonder if that’s the way God feels when we go to the zoo and see all the animals he has created but forget to acknowledge him. I wonder how God feels when we walk outside late at night to observe the heavens, admiring the beauty of the moon and stars, but forget to praise him for designing and sustaining such beauty and glory. The next time we’re admiring some of God’s creation with our children, let’s be sure to call attention to the Creator and give honor to him.

Father,

May we not be slow to see and praise your handiwork as we encounter it many times throughout each day. Amen.
