Light

Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul. But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness.

Human eyes are the most sophisticated cameras in the whole world. They were graciously given to us by our Creator; we did not have to pay for them. Light is traveling all around us, but we wouldn’t be able to see it if our eyes couldn’t bend the light and form images.

When a ray of light first meets the eye, it falls on the cornea, which bends the light so it will go through the pupil and iris to the flexible lens. The lens adjusts so that light patterns focus correctly on the retina. From there the image is carried to the brain by the optic nerves. The brain decodes all these messages and tells us what we are seeing. God has made us amazingly complex!

In the same way that light surrounds our physical bodies, God’s light shines all around our souls. But before it can change us, it must enter our lives. In Psalm 119:130 we read, “As your words are taught, they give light; even the simple can understand them.”

Since our eyes are organs of vision, we must be careful about what we observe, and as moms we also need to protect the eyes of our children. It’s our responsibility to seek out the wholesome and to run from the destructive. Of course, our eyes should daily be in God’s Word, because only the Word of God, used by the Spirit of God, has the power to bend the light of Jesus into our souls.

Thank you that your light is always available and that it gives us understanding. May our eyes turn away from the unwholesome things of this world but spend time reading your Word, which changes us when it enters our lives. Amen.
