God

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth!

Psalm 121:1-2

What do we do when we make something? If we make a cake with our children, we cause it to exist by combining all the ingredients, mixing them, and then baking. If we make a piece of pottery, we shape some clay with our hands or a machine. If we make laws, we institute or establish them.

When God made heaven and earth, he introduced the wonderful process of creativity. He caused things to happen. He shaped. He established. He brought life into existence. He caused matter to assume specific functions and act in specific ways.

But there’s a huge difference between what we make and what God made. When we make a cake or a piece of pottery, we start with ingredients, but God made something out of nothing. I love the questions God asked Job in Job 38:4-7 (TLB): “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Do you know how its dimensions were determined, and who did the surveying? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone, as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?” It’s quite clear that God is God, and we are not!

When we encounter challenges and difficulties in our lives, how comforting and encouraging to realize that we can run to our Creator—the one who can make something out of nothing—asking him to bring order to our sometimes chaotic existence here on earth.

Father,

Thank you that heaven and earth are full of your glory! Thank you for giving us abilities to be creative with things that you brought into being. We know that you alone can bring order to our existence here on earth. Amen.
