Food

Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink—even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk—it’s all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen, and I will tell you where to get food that is good for the soul!

Isaiah 55:1-2

On a bright, sunny day, our family hiked up a trail in the Colorado Rocky Mountains to Agnes Veil Falls. The falls were situated way back off the road, and it was quite a climb to get there. But the reward was worth it! With the sun high in the deep blue sky, we heard the rushing water before we saw it. Great torrents of sparkling water cascaded over the jagged rocks, coming from melting snow above our ten-thousand-foot perch.

My family loves to vacation close to water. There is something refreshing about being near it. But water is more than just good recreation; it’s essential for our bodies. We may be able to live without food for some days, but not without water. That helps explain why Isaiah likened our thirst for water to our soul’s thirst for God.

Sometimes we try to quench our hunger and thirst for God with other things, even good things. But Isaiah reminds us that it is only in finding the Lord that we will find satisfaction. And Jesus, in the Gospel of John, reminds us that he himself is the Living Water. God’s Word and God’s Son water our hearts, bringing life to us and satisfying us with God himself.

Thank you that you have provided a way to quench the thirst in our souls. May we daily drink in all the refreshment that it provides and be fruitful for you. In the strong name of Jesus, amen.
