Faith 2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish. He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterward. Now he is seated in the place of highest honor beside God’s throne in heaven.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1867, Peter Cameron Scott grew up to establish the Africa Inland Mission, which now has more than 850 missionaries. Looking back on all the obstacles he faced, I marvel at how he kept going.

During his first trip to Africa, he came down with a severe case of malaria and had to return home. After he recuperated, he went back to Africa with his brother, John. They had been there only a short time when John was struck down with malaria and died. All alone, Peter buried his brother. Even in the pain and loneliness of those days, he recommitted himself to preaching the gospel in Africa. Sadly, his health deteriorated and he had to return to England.

Although he had pledged himself to God, he didn’t know how he would ever break free from the loneliness and depression he was feeling. He wanted to go back to Africa, but he wasn’t sure it would be possible.

One day he visited Scottish missionary David Livingstone’s tomb in Westminster Abbey. Kneeling down in front of it, he read, “Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring” (John 10:16, NKJV).

This verse inspired him to rise from his knees and make plans to return to Africa. It was on this last trip that he founded the mission that is still a powerful force for the gospel in Africa today.

Are you feeling lonely or depressed? Do you feel like quitting? A mom of faith is one who focuses on God and the increase of his Kingdom amid all the hustle and bustle of each day’s activities. Does that mean she never gets discouraged? No. But she prays for the perseverance she needs to keep going.

Some days we get so weary and discouraged that it’s difficult to press on. Thank you that you are always faithful. May we focus on you and run to you for help and encouragement. Thanks that you care and listen. Amen.
