Choices

Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, that you and your descendants might live!

Deuteronomy 30:19

To choose is to select from a number of possibilities, and we do it all day long. When my children come to the table for breakfast, will I set out cereal, or will I cook eggs? Will I walk today or not? Moving on to some bigger choices, will I send my children to private schools or public schools, or will I home school? Out of the many churches in my community, which body will I worship with?

If the breakfast issue is a “baby bear” choice, and the school and church issues are “mama bear” choices, I believe a “papa bear” choice is presented in Deuteronomy 30:19.

Moses explained to the children of Israel that they had a choice to make, and it was a choice to be made with their hearts. Moses asked the people to choose between life and death, blessings and curses. The question of the day was, “Do you choose God—yes or no?”

Paul presented that choice to his readers in Romans 10:6-10, and we have the same choice before us today. We can choose Christ and walk in his ways, or we can be drawn to other gods, bringing a curse upon ourselves. Simply stated, a choice for Christ brings life and blessing for us and for our children.

Thank you that you didn’t make us robots, but you created us with the ability to choose. With the power of your Spirit, help us to make choices for you and your Kingdom. Amen.
