Choices

You will keep on guiding me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.

Psalm 73:24-26

When I was a student at Moody Bible Institute, I sang in the Moody Chorale. Whether we toured in England, Miami, Scotland, or Syracuse, we began each concert by singing:

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,

Pilgrim through this barren land;

I am weak, but Thou art mighty;

Hold me with Thy powerful hand.^a

Weak. Perplexed. Uncertain of how to choose. Do you ever feel that way? I do. When we encounter challenging circumstances, where do we go for help with our needs and our choices?

Where we look for guidance says a lot about our character. Some people turn to the local bar or a palm reader, but a wise choice would be a pastor or a counselor—a mature person who believes in and loves God and his Word. When we have serious choices to make, we need wise counselors. One of my sons is deciding which college to attend; his guidance counselor at school is a great resource person. One of my friends is navigating through some challenges in her marriage; her marriage counselor is a huge source of help.

Human counselors are helpful, but Jesus is the foremost counselor in the world. He knows us, loves us, is patient with us, and encourages us. And—as any good counselor—he doesn’t protect us from problems, but he equips us to face them with honesty and courage.

When you feel weak or uncertain, grab on to Jesus’ hand and ask him to help you choose.
